# Cancel a job

> Stop a run or build, then check whether it already changed the website.

Cancel a job to stop a run or build you no longer need. Send `POST /v1/jobs/{id}/cancel`, or call `cancel_job` with its `job_id`.

The answer is the job. It may read `running` while it stops, then `cancelled`.

## Check what already happened

Cancelling can't undo an action the job already sent to the website. Read `write_status` even when the job reports `cancelled`:

| `write_status` | Meaning |
| - | - |
| `not_attempted` | Nothing reached the website |
| `not_applied` | The change was not made |
| `applied` | The change happened |
| `may_have_applied` | The change may have happened; check the website first |
| `null` | The job only reads |

Run a write again only after you know it didn't happen.
